This is an interesting question, I believe it would be impossible to answer fully as there are pos and neg for both sides. Generally my answer would have to be that all we would be doing then is responding to crime with violence therefore are we as bad as the offender? Maybe prison is a way to question why they did the crime, away from society a time to reflect and hopefully change this behaviour. I'm not saying im correct but if you commited a crime know you would get a flogging for the day or the risk of being taken away from your family or from your life your freedom being taken away, which would be the better deterant? Interesting...

Maybe yes, for some minor felonies and certain misdemeanors, such as making terroristic threats, or spouse abuse, we shoud have paddling or whipping in public.
Depending on the nature of the threat, for some violent crimes, we should poke out the eyes, or cut off the hand they use to write with.
Lobotomy or rape might be appropriate for some offenders, such as robbers, terrorists, or rapists.
I'm male, and 45.

I'd MUCH rather have a big spanking that would last, what a few seconds, hurt for a few hours (even if it hurt for a few days) then go to jail! No matter how little or long the sentence was.
