You must mean men...because there's no way all these guys have hairless chests....more men wax and shave themselves that my guess is one out of two guys shave thier chest, arms and trim and clip the rest.
I don't think it's purely for the sake of the camera either.

yea... and then there's a lovely thing called airbrushing in photoshop. if we all had professional photo editors touching up our photos, we'd all look flawless too.

Not always, there photos can be digitally refinished making them look air brushed and perfect.
