Many were furious. They could have cared less about the politics of the day. Some were disappointed but said, at least publicly, that they understood. Frankly I don't think most really understood. They were young and had devoted their entire lives to reach the Olympics. For many it was their only shot and it was taken away. Not to be out done the USSR boycotted the 1984 games in LA. It was political one upsmanship!! In the end no body won. If I had trained all those years and then had some peanut farmer tell me I couldn't pursue my great dream, I'd have been pissed too.

My coach was on the opposite end of that--he could've gone in 1984 when the USSR boycotted the LA games. He doesn't talk about it.
