It may be a simple case of you not putting both socks in the wash, or that they are so small they get misplaced easily amongst other dirty laundry.
Having said that, I do believe there is a sock conspiracy. Why do you think they sell them in huge packs?
I've got a bag of about 20 odd socks... yes, I'm still hopeful that I will find their other half, though some have been separated for a few years now.
How comes these missing socks turn up when you actually move home?

In some machines, socks are just small enough to fit through the drain hose and so they go... Machines with filters usually catch them before they slip out of the washer. Sometimes they get pushed up under the rim during the spin cycle. I hate when I lose a sock...

It's a rule, washing machines eat one sock out of each pair.

Check the filter on your washer. A little drawer on the front or side of it. If they are there get them out quick of your washer will run badly. If they are not there then they could be hidden in the fitted sheet or duvet/pillowcase etc. or check the floor!
My friend rang me a few years ago saying her washer wouldn't drain. I told her about the filter (what she'd never heard about). She got a sock or 2 out of there and it worked again.

Are you sure you haven't dropped them in transit from your washing machine to your drawers?
Check the place you match them up, you could have a whole pile of them down the back of the sofa!

try putting them into a mesh bag with a zipper before you wash them, then it doesn't eat them, better still buy all same colour socks so you always have a 'pair'
