My gas drier broke 2 weeks ago. (Kenmore) The repairman charged $143 to replace a $16 fuse and said that would fix it. (Sears) It broke again last week. The repairman said it needs another fuse and a thermostat. The charge would be about $120, and the part needs to be ordered. The drier is about 12 years old. Is it worth putting more money into this, or should I get a new one?

If the fuse has opened it is a symptom of another problem. Fuses open to protect the elecrical/electronic controls from burning up. Replacing the fuse does not ficx the root cause of the problem.

I would buy a new drier and I would never buy an appliance from Sears.

odd question really, since my last 2 dryers cost me about $150 each, although electric. I have repaired my dryers washers and anything else in my home for years, and agree never saw a $16 fuse. Sounds more like it was some type of overload or thermo cutout. either way labor for this was wayyyy too high. Buy a new one....is the best answer by far

Go ahead and replace it. Sounds like there may be another problem in the motor or blower causing the fuses to short out. Also a newer dryer will be more efficient saving a little on your gas bill. If you can afford it invest in one of the high efficiency models, they really cut down on fuel cost and work better.

Replace it and Stay away from Sears repair men. They are Subcontractors. ( I've NEVER seen a $16 fuse!)

Replace the dryer it will only nickle and dime you to death. once parts start going bad it only gets worse. 12 yrs is really good on a dryer. Shop around for best prices and good luck. I hope you find a good one on sale
