Well, in Iraq, they usually hide Weapons of Mass destruction, and dead Kurds in the holes.
In Texas, they sometimes pump high pressure CO2 into the holes to get more oil out. Then they leave the CO2 down there.

Groundwater and or the dirt compacts and covers the area. Cement fills the hole of the drill itself.
