I am not sure why people think it has anything to do with the devil. Kids are thinking of one thing and one thing only CANDY!! My sister is one of those people who will not let her kids go trick or treating because of the devil...despite the fact that she never goes to church..despite the fact that she went till she was like 15(LOL) you ask her why and all she will say is. "It's witchcraft" she is a loser, I think she is just too lazy!

It is pagan in origin and the dressing up was to scare the evil spirits away. It is very close to Day of The Dead in Mexico. The devil comes into view when the transition you made in your costume makes you visible as one of the devils servants. For one night he is free to be with his companions. He needs friends also. Watch for him next Halloween, he is there.

It was known as Hollow's Eve, and it was not started by the devil I dont think, it had to do with dressing up in costumes for some reason, maybe entertainment. People would go around showing off there costumes to the villagers.

IT is a Christian celebration before All Souls Day..."Hallow Eve" is what it stands for, and is a day of mourning for lives that have passed on. It takes the Goblins and Ghosts of pagans and combines them with the holy day, All Saints day and All Soul's day ... harmless fun. It is a sad state when Christians have to find something evil in everything that goes on in the world...sin, sin, sin...Don't they ever do anything that is fun? Where did this "Praying to Satan" thing come from...a deranged Christian's mind who had too little to do. Good luck

The halloween tradition is shrouded in confusion. Like elswehere, the christians in Europe discovered a very important pagan holiday, and they marked that day with a special curch service, in this case, "All Hallowe'd Eve," which is a night of remembering all that's holy, and is followed by all saint's day.
The pagan ceremonies apparently involved carving out vegetables, filling them with hot coals, and going door to door to recieve gifts as some sort of way to ward off "evil spirits."
The pagan traditions apparently worshipped some horned god, or goddess, and for this reason, the christians have forever claimed that all pagan traditions have something to do with worshipping the devli, but in reality, halloween is no more a satanic holiday than easter or christmas.
However, in the 60s, a certain drug-crazed person named Antoin Lavey founded the Church of Satan, as a way to celebrate his hatred for christians, and his love of dirty panties... He chose Haloween, and 'Walpurgisnacht (April first) to be his "holy days." He called his organization the church of satan, but in all reality, that was only a name, chosen to signify his direct rejection of all things christian. As far as the organization worships anything at all, they worship themselves.
A certain number of dissatisfied, and generally anti-social youths came to follow him... or more precisely, follow themselves, and take on the name he chose to upset their parents. Their anti-social behavior attracted the attention of the police, who then decided that every black cat that got run over on halloween, and every rotten egg that got thrown at halloween represented the end of christian socitey as we knew it, and was an effort to summon the devil himself. Maybe some of these confused youths actually were trying to do such a thing, but they aren't likely to have any more success at it on halloween than any other night.

I believe it actually started with Guy Fawkes Day in Ireland. So it has nothing to do with the devil. People are just ignorant. They jump to juvenile conclusions about things they don't understand.

It's a pagan holiday. The jack-o-lantern, trick or treating, dressing up as scary monsters, all originated from the pagan (wiccan/druid) holiday Samhain. This holiday included, among other detestable things, human sacrafice. Someone will probably come and deny this, but feel free to look it up for yourself.
