Just keep asking one question of politicians and debaters: "Are you Corporatist or Localist?"
They either believe that individuals are the most important part of our constitution (the Bill of Rights) or they believe that some group has the power to override the individual's rights to choose, speak, worship (or not), print, investigate, have due process, etc.
Usually, the excuse is "the economy" for forcing people to accept fascism (corporatism). It isn't a question of Republican or Democrat: both sides are trying to usurp the rights of individuals in order to maintain power and profits.
The last president we had that stood up for the individual was Teddy Roosevelt (an actual Republic-an). Everything since then has been mired in marketing.
