It's part of a communion set, so taking a hammer to it is not an option! It's been placed in crookedly and seems to be very reluctant to come out again, and I'm afraid of breaking it.

Wow - I'm staggered by the fast response - thanks, folks! Has anybody tried WD40 in this sort of situation - does that work?

What actually happened? I shook the bottle containing very hot water with the stopper in it to remove some residue. Couldn't loosen the stopper then, but when the water was cold the stopper came away fairly easily, without the need for applying anything else other than light pressure to pull it out. It seems that patience is the answer!
Thank you all for your help - the cooking ol solutions would have been next on the list!

The objective here is to SHRINK the stopper, while EXPANDING the neck...Although it seems a good option to use the air in the bottle to 'blow' the stopper out, I think the cooling of the air may have the reverse effect, and pull the stopper tighter. Plumbing stores etc sell pipe freezer kits, get one, put the bottle in warm water, and heat up slowly (prevent cracking) dont worry about the stopper getting hot. When the bottle is nicely hot, Get a couple of pairs of washing tongs ........to hold the bottle in the hot water, and the other to hold/pull the stopper.... get a friend to chill the stopper rapidly with the pipe freezer , pull gently on the stopper.

Put a few drops of olive oil around the stopper between it and the mouth of the decanter. Place the decanter near a radiator or about 18 in from a fire to warm through slowly. Then gently tap the stopper with a wooden utensil and try to remove the stopper. Repeat the process until the stopper comes out - good luck!

You need to warm the neck of the carafe so that it expands slightly and them wiggle the stopper out. The secret is to try to not let the heat reach the stopper or it will expand as well and you'll be no better off. Try using a hair dryer, right round the neck.

I know this works........ Place bottle up to the neck in fairly hot water, taking care not to get the stopper hot, or wet. Pour a little gin, vodka. or meths around the stopper. This will run in and "wet" the bond, Using a tea-towel remove from water and try to remove the stopper, it usually works. Best of luck

Be careful with the hot water. It will expand the air in the glass. But yes, try soap on the top, run under warm water to cause air expansion, then give a little tug. It'll pop out. But be carefull! There will be pressure.
Hope that helps!

Soak your bottle in cold soapy water. Cold makes things contract and the soap makes it slippery. If that doesn't work, try using a bit of oil and heat the oil first so it will thin and then be able to slip into the neck. Good Luck

Put the base of the bottle in hot (tap) water. The air in the bottle will expand & help your effort. Try pulling it out while it is still in water. Add oil to the neck if it is still stubborn.

I had that ensue a year or so in the past. I improvised and positioned a saucepan in determination to the carafe.A toothpick held the stopper up No instantaneous coffee for me! we've 2 comparable coffee pots now.decrease than $ 20 each and each. If one carafe nevertheless has coffee in it we are in a position to apply the different one to make tea. If company is right here we are in a position to apply the two for morning coffee.

I have never been able to get glass apart but maybe you are luckier than me. Try using vegetable oil and pour a small amount on it and wiggle it gently. Maybe vaseline. Just be very careful because if it shatters it can cut your finger off or slice you open.
