Dogs are desendece of wolves. Wolves have differnt placement of their k-9 teeth on their mandibles, thats how to distinguish the difference of a dog skull from a wolf skull. There are a few differences conformation wise. They are beautiful animals and should always be apprieciated in the wild.

I see folks with some very bad information about the danger of wolves.
They can breed with dogs so there are some hi-breds around, and wolves are probably the most loyal of animals going.
They are also endangered. While a mother could and would attack it would be because she precieved danger to her pup, which your picking it up could be construed as.
Currently there is an issue in Oregon where they are asking to be allowed to kill wolves even though they are endangered and have just recently been re-established there.
Wolves as pets is a tough one. If you have a hi-bred you cannot always admit it as some states have laws forbidding the innoculation of and treatment of such breeds or laws against owning such an animal.
They also are not considered to be predictable enough to be a good pet. I have found from personal experience that they make wonderful intellegent companions. Fortunately most people cannot identify the wolf in my hi-bred dog, nor do I tell anyone what the "non"-dog half is.
Wolf Dogs - These Wolf "hybrids" are a cross between a Wolf and a domestic dog. However, in 1992, scientists reclassified dogs and Wolves as the same species making the term "hybrid" obsolete. Wolf content, the number of generations removed from a pure Wolf and the type of dog used in each cross must be considered when defining a Wolfdog. Because of random genetics inherited from both the dog and the Wolf, the looks and/or behavior can vary.
There are breeders who do cross breed which is a much safer way to find an animal that is more likely to be dependable as a pet.
On this site you can find some of the breeders who work with wolfdogs.

To try and domesticate your wild wolf pup would probably be an error as you do not have the experience and training to know what you are dealing with.

All dogs are descended from wolves or wild dogs. So, in essence, you have it backwards. Wild dogs ancestors are wolves. Men domesticated wolves and other wild dogs long ago, and began to breed them to bring out certain traits. That is how we have ended up with all the different breeds today. Your grandfather is right though. Leave the wolf pups alone. If the mother had come along when you picked up that pup, you could have been attacked or even killed.

No, wolves are wolves, dogs are dogs, You really dont want to have a wolf as a pet. They are meant to live in the wild. Plus I bet you would have to have some kind of special permit to have one as a pet and your neighbors probably wouldnt care much for it If you want to have a pet in your home, go to the animal shelter and adopt one.

Although all dogs are decended from ancestral wolves, wolves are not just wild dogs.
You let a terrier loose in the woods, if it survives it will not turn into a wolf.

Well, technically all of your responses are correct...wolves were the original pets, if you can even consider such an animal as a "pet"...over the years, as wolves came into regular contact w/ humans, they became even more and more domesticated and voila, we have "man's best friend"- dogs.

What you did was VERY DANGEROUS. If the mother wolf has seen you picking up her young one she would have attacked you. Wolves are NOT wild dogs! They are wild animals and you should keep your distance from them.
