where the rings rub.....because of friction

Cylinders are worn the most in the center of the ring travel, about half way up the cylinder. This is because the ring pack is travelling the fastest when its at that point. Typical visible sign of cylinder wear is a ridge at the top of the cylinder where the 1st compression ring travel stops at top of piston stroke. The amount of wear is called "cylinder bore taper" and specified in thousandth of inches. It, and the clearance between piston skirt and cylinder wall are considered when asessing engine wear.

The cylinder is wore out not by the piston but by the piston rings...
The piston itself will wear out before the cylinder because it's made of Aluminum which is softer than the cylinder itself which is made of steel
The upper part of the cylinder will wear out faster cause thats where the rings ride the most with compression force.

Heat and pressure is greatest at the top. Ever notice where the top ring stops there is no wear to the cyl. head? Then just below 1/4 to 3/8 inch the most wear happens. Unless the engine block has overheated the taper of the cyl. wall is smallest diameter at the bottom of the cyl. and greatest diameter near the top. Rotation of the crankshaft also wears the thrust side a little more. If you can feel ring ridge at the top the engine has to be re bored and fitted with new oversize pistons.

The answer is simple abd obvious and I am not being sarcastic. It is where the piston and cylinder touch. It is that simple and that complicated because in most mechanical systems this action is hidden and only observable when the system is working.

if the engine is well balanced, it should be totally even. If it wears toward the top most, your monkey azz forgot to put oil in again huh??
