One (only one) of a pair will periodically cross into another dimension where they are deposited on an uninhabited, unknown planet. It is many kilometers deep with them by now.

It's the sock monster... He also lurks under children's beds, and it's not just socks - ever wonder where the other glove/mitten went? But, be careful; the sock monster waits to return a "lost" sock until the day after you finally toss the mateless one that sat on your dryer for two years.

Is it the ratty old socks? Maybe it just wants you to get rid of them and get new ones. My dryer is concerned for me like that too. It likes to put my duvet on my comforter for me. Next time just thank the dryer for its concern.

an idea to keep this from happening. when you take your socks off use a safety pin and pin the two socks together. then they will always remain together through wash and dry. plus you never have to worry about finding the match amoung other pairs of socks you wash/dry.

Don't know where they go but I bought a mesh bag in the laundry section for a dollar that you can throw your socks in so you don't have to go buy more.
