Control is a word used to describe a group or item that is used to measure another group by. If you want to find out if a certain pill helps fight cancer, you must test it. You form two groups... One is the "control" group (this group has cancer, but NO REAL TREATMENT IS GIVEN (they may be given a pill that resembles the real pill but is a fake) The experimenters do this so that the "control" group is as similar to the other group as possible. The other group has cancer and they ARE given the REAL pill. They are known as the TREATMENT or TEST group. You compare the effects of the pill on those in the test group with the effects of the pill on the "CONTROL" group to see if the pill made a difference. The control group is simply a baseline, normal, average measuring stick to judge something else by.

The control is the the one not being experimented on. Example if a company is testing a drug they give the controlled group a plecebo (sugar pill) to see if the effects had by the experimented group are real or just apporitions.

A control would be a study of the experiment that you are doing but the control, you would know all of the variables. Ex Bread mold. Control, bread in original bag with a known mold date ( If you know it takes 2 weeks for it to mold) experiment 1 bread in open air, 2 bread in fridge, 3 bread in paper bag etc...
