Because this is the normal process in any civil rights movement.
First the minority accepts things as they are.
Next they begin to question the status quo.
Then they realize that that they are being mistreated, and begin to fight for rights.
The majority reacts with outrage that the minority would dare seek such rights.
Some of the majority begins to change their position.
There are gains and losses in the process of acheiving equality.
Eventually, equality is achieved.
You can look at all of the major civil rights movements here in the US, and see that they all followed this pattern. The reason why we don't have equal rights yet is because we are still fairly early on and there is more fighting to do.
Don't give up!!!

Sorry, but currently that is a fact of life in the U.S.
It could be worse. You could be of the orientation that attracts you to children, for which you would have even less rights to express your desires. Or even tell anyone that you are of that orientation.
The day may come when people of all sexual orientations are protected and allowed to openly express their desires. Canada has taken a first step in this direction. I'm sure someone is trying to find a way for the other orientations in Canada to have their rights protected in the coming years, along with making it illegal to speak out in public against any other orientation, as it is now with the new laws on the homosexual orientation.

Because ultra conservatives always need someone to use as a scapegoat to make themselves feel superior.
They've had blacks, Jews, Irish, Italians, Asians, etc.. It's just gays turn in the barrel. Afterall, they have GOD on their side. :-)
It's really the oldest trick in the book for gaining a following. Demonize a traditionally helpless minority and people will flock to you (bunch of mother flockers if you ask me). But the old trick still works great.
In other words, there is a lot of truth in the adage that half the population of the US is of below average intelligence.

Because gay people will always be the minority, and if we wait for the majority to extend full rights, we might as well move to Canada.
The majority is not going to support the rights of the individual. It's going to take legal action to provide full rights to all citizens.

you have a valid point. this country unfortunately is under control of the right-wing conservatives. they line their pockets and fund their programs with our money, and kick us in the teeth for it by trying to pass more laws to make sure we still don't have rights. Sometimes, Jon X, I wish I did live in Canada! and if we don't get some more open-minded people in office, I don't doubt more of us will pack up and do just that! but, why should we have to? we need to be more vocal and register to vote...and do it! and get involved with organizations like HRC like I have!

Ahhh your learning, here in Canada, that's how we were finally able to attain our rights. Instead of arguing solely on the basis of human rights, some of us had put forward the concept of Taxation without representation or equality of person. Good on you for noting this discrepancy.

Because of hatred and prejudice from homophobic people -- the same B.S. that has gone on forever, but times are changing. Slowly, but surely.

You're just angry. But if you were to reflect a minute then you'd see that you have the same rights as non-gay people. Single people have the same rights as gay people. Heterosexuals who are co-habitation have the same rights as gay couples. When you think about it, society just gave some extra rights to married couples because they thought that would help them out with raising their children. So the "half the rights" you're complaining about is actually there because of the need for society to perpetuate itself through raising children.
