i would say the shredded tires wood chips can get caught in shoes and besides that all kinds of bugs like wood chips so i wouldn't go with those and shredded tires are soft if someone falls and they are not as likely to get hurt cause the shredded tires kinda help take away soem of the blow of the fall and the tires would most likely keep weeds out better thatn woodchips .
think of it this way shredded tires are rubber adn can pervent the growth of weeds woodchips will allow them through kinda liek a bandaid helps to keep a cut safe from bacteria well shredded tires would do the same thing bascially

Wood chips. Shredded tires are black. Black attracts heat. Neither will keep the weeds completely out. But if you kill the weeds with weed killer and put plastic down and the wood chips over that it will take a while for weeds to grow. Everytime the wind blows dirt around it gathers on top of whatever you layed down and seeds blow and birds drop them thus creating new weeds. All you can do is keep pulling them or poisoning them as they come up. Bermuda grass even comes up through concrete.

I was just cleaning up for parks and rec. They use wood chips in children play areas - works great. It will keep the weeds away. They add a few trash cans full of wood chips every now and then to spruce it up and keep it looking nice. They have some rubber surfaces, but they are solid - yet soft and spongy and easy on the feet.

I'd opt for a good landscaping fabric, made by DuPont, prior to putting down colored rubber mulch. Both can be purchased at Lowe's, or Home Depot. The landscaping fabric smothers weeds, so look for a tight weave in the material. The rubber mulch costs more, but does not attract insects, nor mold.

I would go for the tires. They are alot softer. As far as keeping weeds down, I guess they would both do about the same, unless you get pretty big tire shreds.

there are pros and cons to both... although the shredded tires help re-use an often tossed out product. its easy to disinfect then wood and lasts much longer then wood. it is a cheaper solution and I found its softer on the behind when you fall on tires then wood..
