This is a "look it up to learn what it means" type of assignment. You will probably want to use a theasarus to look up synonyms for the underlined words (words that mean the same thing or something very similar), then use the dictionary to check the exact meaning of the challenge word which is a common synonym to all three of the underlined words.

For the first one, you have three underlined words: Tense, Rigid, and Tight. These all other ways of saying TAUT, which is to say that something which is "taut" is also tense, rigid, and tight (they are synonyms for taut, so they will be listed in the thesaurus under taut). But "taut" specifically means to be held under tension, so it can only really be used properly in sentence (c) -- The man held the rope taut.

The rest of the assignment works the same way -- "lavish," "plentiful," and "generous" are all ways of saying "bountiful," but "bountiful" can only be used properly in one of those three sentences (the dictionary will tell you which one is correct).

If you don't have a thesarus available, but do have a dictionary, you can look up each of the challenge words and each of the underlined words in order to find out what each means.

Also, don't orget there are lots of online dictionaries and thesaruses (since obviously you are on a computer). You can just type in "definition of rigid" or "synonyms for tight" for example into the search box for Yahoo! or whatever your home page is, and they will come up.

1. Taut - The man held the rope taut.

2. Bountiful - The farmer is grateful for the bountiful crops.

3. Heirloom - The ring was a treasured family heirloom.

4. Adjoin - A park and a school adjoin our property.

The only one you don't seem to have and answer for is turquoise which can either be a colour(blue) or a stone(gemstone?)

Turquoise

Ancient and yet always at the height of current fashion: that is Turquoise for you. Its brilliant sky-blue belongs to the all-time favourite trend colours in the world of fashion and jewellery.

In many cultures of the Old and New World this gemstone has for thousands of years been appreciated as a holy stone, a good-luck-charm or a talisman. It is a virtual "peoples’ gemstone”. The oldest proof for this lies in Egypt, where in tombs from the period around 3000 B.C. there were found artefacts set with Turquoise. In the ancient Persian Kingdom the sky-blue gemstones were originally worn around the neck or on the hand as protection to ward off unnatural death. If the stones changed their colour, there was an imminent danger for the wearer. However, in the meantime it has been uncovered that Turquoises may in fact change their colour, but this reaction is not necessarily an indication of danger impending. The reason for the colour change is rather the influence of light, cosmetic products, dust or even the ph-value of the skin, which may all trigger off chemical responses.

You need to learn how to use a thesaurus. You can find one online at http://thesaurus.reference.com/

Just look up the underlined words, and you'll find which challenge word is synonymous.
