I'm assuming its a black adder, as it was a traditional british snake. Whether it is or not, depends on how thorogh the television production company were in talks with the zoo. It may be an availble approximation. The gloved hand is undoubtably a zoo keeper, and not atkinson!
Whatever the snake, they would have asked for at least an approximation, and i believe black adders still exist, though not wild.
As a child, in the uk, i was bought up near a large area of open common land (its the net, no local) but i mean, open...and my dad warned me not to touch snakes, namely the adder, of which i have seen one! They are poisonus, but the hospitals in rural locations of this type are well versed, and equiped with antidote. the adders poison is not powerful, rather "potentially" lethal.
The common adder exists today, in parklands over 50 sq miles, and are rather shy!
Ps. ive just re read the question, and realised the comment....sorry, i dont know what snake it is, but hope my answer gives you a rememberance, that britian has snakes too, they do live wild, and some people actually accept them, as natural, though for teenagers in cities...it seems weired!

It's an adder that is surprising black!
Think they may have used this type of snake because of the title or something or other!

Perhaps a black adder?! It is a type of snake so it stands to reason that it is the type of snake shown.
