It suggests many things:
1.- They could not forsee to last longer than that (they were right, aparently this calendar has outlived them for 500 years)
2.- They ran out of space on the stone, so all that could fit is 2012
3.- It suggests the end of complicated calendars.
4.- It suggests you have too much time in your hands.

Some people have chosen this date as Armageddon, most of these (some peoples) are trying to sell us something. It is the end of an age. I would agree with Ianna, governments need to deconstruct especially those lead by religions. Hopefully this will happen no later than 2012. I believe 2012 is the year we enter into Aquarius.
We have to resist being lead by government like sheep. Pluto (Ianna is dead on), is all about stuff that has to happen. Belief is not required, leaves don't need to believe in photosynthesis to turn green. You can't fire Hades, if anything, by declassifying (dwarfing) a planet that does all its work below the surface or hidden, we've just empowered him on his terms. I await the age of Aquarius, independent, unconventional, friendly, humanitarian, progressive, intuitive. Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, despises existing order-no matter what it is,and keeps trying to get everyone else to change...happens to love fighting governments too, hopefully its just the right stuff at the right time.

Good question and I have mulled this one over in my mind many times. Because I study astrology I believe that we are going into a new age. However, before this can happen old structures will have to be destroyed. Pluto goes into Capricorn in 2008 which will bring the demise of government, banking, upheaval (during this period, much that is outdated and ready to die will fall. Revolution and anarchy will surface more than in the years before, and the people (Pluto ruling the public and the anarchic mob) will be heard with a louder voice. This is a time when governments will have to keep close watch on their thermonuclear devices, also symbolized by Pluto.
Sure an end is coming, but also a new beginning. A better world. For thousands of years humanity has been told of 1000 years of peace.

I was very interested in this when I saw it on the Discovery Channel one day. According to some things I have read on line, it has something to do with an astronomical alignment that would have been of religious significance to the Maya. I believe it is when Venus is in the center of the Milky Way that's visible. Since the Maya worshiped Venus, this would have been a significant event for them possibly representing the beginning of a new age. I have forgotten which site it was, but it came up easily on a search, you just have to weave through the astrological scary prophecy stuff to find it.

Some people think that 2012 begins the age of time travel. It turns out that a linear mapping of the I Ching points to the winter solstice in 2012 as well. Grant Morrison wrote a great deal about it in his comic book "The Invisibles".

According to the research I've recently done, year 2012 is the end of an age - a period of 400yrs - and the beginning of an era of enlightenment. However, the end of the (4th) 'world' according to the Maya calendar does not occur until 4000+ AD. Whew! :)

Hopefully it will end the trend of publishers to sell books and magazines by getting people all scared of doomsday. I'm only 35 and have lived through a whole bunch of never happened dooms days. Scared people buy things and its good for the economy and it keeps peoples minds off watching the people who are really scary like our Government.

in some pagan circles, and some Native American circles, the end of the mayan calendar is a topic of great discussion.
it not only is the end of the mayan calendar, but noone has ever written any prophsies after that date either.
some say that it is the end of time.
however most believe that it is the beginning of a new age.
i believe that it is both, the end of the age of technology and the beginning of a new age where man will learn to live in harmony with the land again.
