I would love to hear your answer, I was a scout for the Chicago Black Hawks for 20+ years from the early 1970s to the early 1990s (and Bill Wirtz is not the evil man many make him out to be), and I have copies of the Central Scouting Reports from Gretzky's year in the OHA (1977-1978) and he wasn't on it as the league had a minimum draft age of 20 in 1978 (lowered to 19 in 1979 and 18 in 1980). The #1 rated player by Central Scouting in 1978 was Robert (Bobby) Smith, who also won the OHA scoring championship that year (192 points to Wayne's 182).
Smith was rated #1 in the 1978 draft
Smith was the also the Canadian Major Junior Player of the year
Smith was taken first overall in the 1978 draft
Smith played 15 years in the league (winning a ring in his final year)

So, I would love to hear your answer.

As for the person who chose Steve payne, he was ranked 15th by Central Scouting, and played parts of 10 seasons in the NHL

I hope there is an answer coming for this one. I would think the player in question would have to be someone older than Wayne that played Junior at the same time. Going back a long way to figure that out though......

my first guess was Dale Hawerchuk of the Jets, but then i see you said he only played 9 NHL season's thats a good one. let me see.....Mike Bossy but i think he played 10 season, but still good one.
