Sen. Ted Kennedy is left wing and Sen. Orrin Hatch is right wing. Here is one way to look at it. In "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995), it says:
"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal [i.e., left wing] and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives [i.e., right wing] and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

Right wing is about looking out for the interests of corporations. Left wing is about looking out for the interests of the people.
Right wing denies global warming because addressing the problem would hurt the petrolium industry.
Right wing tries to roll back protective laws for the environment because laws that protect the environment get in the way of profits for filth-belching factories, logging companies, chemical companies, etc.
Right wing opposes abortion and contraception because a growing population means more customers for corporations to sell products to.

Right wingers think people are there to be used by them to make money, and discarded when no longer needed! All the money they made belongs to them alone, though they didn't make it alone!
Those on the left believe in the free market, but not totally at the expense of people! We think business has an obligation to society, right wingers do not!
If it were up to the right, 12 year-olds would still be working 12 hour days in sweat shops!

I must take exception to your use of Rightwing. It's not a fitting name at all. To be a wing, suggest flexibility. Right Column is more accurate.

is this neccessary? is it for school or something? look it up.
edit: do you see that only irrational nut jobs are willing to answer superficial questions with superficial arguments?
eg: right wingers are bad because they're bad!
