considering yahoo saves all the answers and questions unless a user deletes them, a simple search would do the trick to catch plagiarizing.

mrjeffy321: I have seen kdis pretty much copy and paste the problems right out of thier textbooks or wherever they got the problem from. All the teacher woudl have to do is search for the text to the problem or the text to the answer. It would be very little effort.

Under normal circumstances it would be extremely hard, if not impossible, to prove that a particular student is cheating using Yahoo Answers.
Unless the student came right out and said,
"My name is ___ and I am in Mr./Mrs. ____ class at ____ school and I need help with my homework, question #__, ____", it would be hard to identify the person, and even then, it is not really "proof" since anyone can get on here and say something like that.
Plus, it would take a very 'motivated' teacher to actually do something like that, search all over the Internet for a particular students name or homework assignment....it just isn't practical.
The students who 'cheat' by having others do their entire homework assignment for them online don't learn anything and when the test comes around that will not have Yahoo! Answers there to help them.
EDIT:
I have seen that too (unfortunately).
However, do you think, possibly, maybe, that in the process of trying to make money, the text book publishers printed multiple copies of the same book and sold them across the country so that students in California could be using the same book as those in New York? That is always a possibility.
It comes down to the fact that you can never be sure of anyone's identity on the internet, especially when it comes down to a free service such as this.
Cheating is a serious accusation for a teacher to throw at a student, they had better be sure before that accuse him/her.

The purpose of working questions is for the student to gain an understanding of the scientific concepts behind the question. If an answer is taken from yahoo to understand a concept, another question on the same concept should be attempted without outside help. For the instructor, the student's answers are a diagnostic tool to find out what a student understands and does not understand. Several incorrect answers are a signal to the teacher to spend more time teaching the concept. A cheater that plagiarizes cheats only himself or herself of a good education and this becomes very evident in a job interview. My advice to cheaters is to get proficient with the phrase "would you like fries with that".

I am a college teacher and use Yahoo myself to get answers to my students' questions. Teachers only want their students to learn. Cheating is not learning, just completing an assignment.

It is a shame that youg people prefer to ask someone instead of reading a book. Our teachers are at fault here, they have to motivate students into reading and studying from books. The internet is OK but nothing can replace a good textbook and a motivated student.

Yes, I think that they will. In university-based classes today, there is a separate section that teachers must learn to use to search for their students papers. Teachers today always check the students for cheating. As a former teacher, the training for this needs to be more widespread.

Why it should be called cheating. This is learning by a new tool available for them. If they are smart enough to find ana answer from yahoo or anywhere it should be fair. By the way teachers also may have gone through to search for good questions isn't?

Depends on how aware the teacher is about the world around him(her). By looking up the answer on Yahoo, who are you hurting? Only yourself. The only thing you are learning is how to Yahoo.

Cheaters always get caught. Usually at test time but teachers aren't stupid. I am sure that there is more than one teacher answering all of the homework help questions anyway.
