Does it matter? Though we are taught that he discovered America, there is evidence that he didn't.
The evidence? Runestones that date back to about 750ad. Vikings were here that early and it is possible that French were here before that.

He was from Genoa Italy. He got financing for his trip to China from Queen Isabella of Spain. (It's rumored that he knew there was a land mass along the way because his calculations show a fairly accurate distance for the circumference of the earth.)
