Yes, they go together. As you open your heart to give love you take a risk. But the more you pry it open in giving, the more love can flow back in.
I think it is more common to attempt to protect the heart and keep it sealed up and barricaded. Not much love squeaks out and even less manages to get in. Not because no one tries to give it, but because we just won't let it inside. And the heart shrivels up and gets small and stony.
Better to love. Always. And it's not truly reciprocal because when you give love freely and receive love freely the love flowing back always seems greater.

I think you have to give more love than you receive to make up for all the people in the world not giving enough love.

I don't mean romantic love. I mean the love for fellow man. The ability to to do something for humankind to relieve their suffering without asking for anything in return.

Good Christ! First you ask me where it is and after a number of harrowing moments I found it only to have to substantiate and value it. OK, just for you, 3 fingers of JD cost about 3 bucks. I got about 3 bucks worth of love in return. Fair deal. Are you happy?
