Susan Howatch's historical novels - Cashelmara, Penmarric, Wheel of Fortune. They are all brilliant, passionate, and well written. They are very romantic, but not junk romance, and they are long books too so they last a while.

That depends if you would rather bubble gum chick-lit (similar to chick-flicks) usually intended for teenagers or books written for a more adult audience.
If your intentions were for the former, then i suggest:
author meg cabot (author of the princess diary series and a few below.)
how not to spend your senior yr
avalon high
son of the mob
a novel idea
all american girl
the above's sequel-ready or not.

If you like romanse/suspense Iris Johansen is a great author. Her early novels are your standard romance novels but they are great as well.
