Something astonishing, preferably something looks like "live" not like "museum". If I love a dog, I give them chocolate.

PREFERENCE, n. A sentiment, or frame of mind, induced by the erroneous belief that one thing is better than another.

It is longer.

A surprise trip at short notice and a walk on the beach followed by dinner at home.
Forget the fancy restaurant they are usually just full of poseurs, overpriced and with staff that are poorly trained.

Of course if your love is a chocoholic some hand made goodies might make a nice surprise after the meal(which you have painstakingly prepared yourself)

Some guys can actually do quite well in an apron as long as someone else does the washing up!

Herpes - - just kidding.

An invitation to a classical concert, a rare old book, a silk Italian tie, great cufflinks. Even better, play them a song you have written for them. Especially if you can't actually play an instrument. Buy a cheap guitar and write a song and play some chords with it. You will both have a laugh and they will know you have gone to some effort to show them you care. It's kinda touching, especially if they are poor singers but still try.
