Any perpertual calendar is designed to be able to provide the day of the week, month, and so on for any particular year you could name. It usually involves just some simple calculations to determine which of 14 one-year calandars to use for the particular year in question. They've been around since at least the 1100's.

The word 'retrograde' probably means that your particular device is capable of calculating for years in the past instead of years in the future.

Hope that helps!
