The continent of America was actually discovered by the Vikings in the year 1000 a.d.
Around the year 1492 Christopher Columbus decided that he wanted to find a new trade route to India! He believed that the earth was round and not flat. He set sail from Spain with 3 ships in 1492 and 10 months later he discovered San Salvador. Thinking that he had sailed to India, he called the natives there Indians.
