Because caring about the environment clashes against the traditions of stupidity and ignorance that they seek to perpetuate and, "God willing", profit from.
That being said, you should've said "most conservatives", to avoid the generalization. I'm sure there're conservatives that actually care about the environment, as odd as it may seem.

Let me ask you: Are you willing to give up your car or your job for a cleaner environment? What about your friends or neighbors job?
Let me tell you that our cars and factories are about 90% cleaner than they were in the 60's and 70's. But we could end up throw a lot of money away chasing after the next 10%. Meanwhile we'll be loosing jobs to China and India.
As a conservative, I'm all for a cleaner environment, but we have to do it within the framework of what we have right now. If we blindly sign on to treaties like Kyoto, we end up being a third-rate nation.

The air quality has improved since Bush has been in office. The U.S. puts out less pollution than the nations that signed the Kyoto treaty. Why do liberals care more about trees and animals than they do about people? Did you know that in forests that are not logged, such as Southern California, fires are more prevalent? Fire fighters have died because they couldn't use water from protected lakes.

What makes you think Conservatives don't care about the environment? That's not true. We care, we're just not willing to tie ourselves to a tree for weeks, and weeks for some cause. Hey, why don't you ask Al Gore why he flies around in his big jets, and has his big SUV motorcades? One trip on one of his jets uses more fuel than most of us will use in a whole year. Ask John Kerry the same, Bill Clinton, and Hillary, ALL of the Kennedy clan? Here's one for you; Why are Liberals such hypocrites?

We care a lot about the environment. We just require some evidence before spending Trillions of dollars to solve problems that we didn't cause.

A lot do. Corporations for the most part have no interest in the environment maybe because it does not turn a profit.

Extremist right-wings (and not mainstream conservatives) don't care about the environment unless they can somehow make money off of it.

i'm not including a site on Bush's attacks on environmental abuses because there are so many and they are so easy to find. Especially troubling to me is the mercury poisoning our waterways and fish. the amount of impaired waters have steadily increased...
unless you owned scads of stock in companies in the business of using our natural resources and companies that foul our air and water you would be a fool to support Republicans in their support of these campanies.
The Republican view is that if you give companies freedom from regulation and taxation, they will make more money and reinvest that money into making jobs for the middle class...but is it worth the loss to our wild places and mercury in our drinking water, I think not.
The bottom line to life on this planet should not be reduced to dollars in the bank
