Take Paladin's advice one step farther - actually write the corporate office. You have nothing to lose - you're leaving anyway.
Customer service is where the company's image meets reality - all their fancy logos and smart marketing won't overcome bad employees and a nasty customer environment.
Use dates, specific comments, customer's names if available, fallout if any, attitude of abusive employee in the days following the incident and the reaction of store managment. The term "manager" is inappropriate in this guy's case and the corporate managment needs to know it.
Keep detailed notes for yourself - lessons learned, etc...

I would take up the matter with his superior and Human Resources, letting both know that I was prepared to write a detailed statement of the incident to the President of the Company, with a copy to the EEOC, if the matter was not resolved to my satisafaction within 2 business days.
Be prepared to list your terms - apology before all the people who heard it. Customers included. If customers could not be contacted, then a notice in the paper to the effect that:
"I, John/Jane Doe, publicly apologize to (Employee) for the remarks and insinuations I made on 1/02/06. It was both unprofessional and insensitive. I deeply regret any personal and/ or emotional pain and suffering that my outburst may have caused to (Employee) and the and customers and employees who were present and overheard my ranting."

i would quit, abuse is more than an employee has the right to expect. The employee has the right to be treated fair. The employer is not allowed to yell at you in front of customers. If it is an ongoing thing it creates a hostile work environment and can affect others besides the victim. You could also report the abuse to a hire authority.

Too bad I wasn't one of the customers!! I wouldn't have tolerated that kind of behavior, and yelled at the manager in your defense. I am almost 6 feet tall and have learned how to be intimidating.
FYI, it's a criminal offense, and you have the right to call the police, if you are feeling threatened.
I'd be making formal complaints against the jerk.
Sorry you were treated so badly. Hope you get this jerk fired!!

I take it you are speaking of a co-worker who got yelled at?
He can file a grievance with the Labor Board in your community.
