Besides being good exercise for someone who may not get a chance to jog or something (or maybe can't due to physical limitations), walking is a very ancient habit of great thinkers. Aristotle's school of philosophy was called the "peripatetic", meaning "walking around", which was how he apparently preferred to teach his classes. Beethoven used to go for extremely long walks when he was working on a composition, once being jailed as a vagrant by village constables who could not believe the famous composer would just wander into their town humming. That guy might be the most brilliant individual you'll ever have a chance to meet.
Or he could be a nut with a thing about pacing. I dunno.

This is probably how he thinks. Maybe he's working on something big and walking up and down the hallway is how he clears his mind and thinks things out. He probably does his best thinking while walking and might not even realize how many times he's walking back and forth. This is especially likely if he's a writer or an artist he migh come up with his best ideas while doing this. As long as he doesn't seem to be a threat to you, just leave him be. Don't ask him why he does it, you might make him self-conscious and then that might hurt his creative process.

Is he staring at you when he walks past your room? Maybe he likes you or somebody else that works on that floor. Maybe he's a stalker. Maybe he's not right in the head. Who knows? Ask him! Unless you think he's not a nice person, then I would stay away.

Maybe he is thinking and needs to pace. Maybe he is talking on a cell phone and can't sit still to do it. Maybe he is having some sort of mental problem like OCD. Maybe he has ADD and can't sit still. Maybe he needs the exercise. Maybe he needs to work off nervous tension.
Could be any number of reasons.

I don't do this myself, but some people 'think' when pacing. The movement, somehow frees the mind to wander down it's OWN hallway and byways. Yet he also sounds like a mouse in their revolving treadmill. Weird. Ask him about it.
