I want to use a little passage from my book I'm writing about as the beginning sentences of my essay. Then I want to start my essay. Do I need to introduce the passage and talk about why I used it? or can I just start writing my essay after I type in the quote

i suggest you start writing the essay after the passage. however, i think that the content of that first paragraph should be related to the passage. you can do so, without directly explaining why you are using the passage.

I believe the correct format would be to use the quote with a footnote at the bottom of page or have a separate page for footnotes!

Your introductory paragraph should be in your own words, unless your using an outside source to support your point. Even then, it's better to use both primary and secondary sources to support your point throughout your essay.
