just move the 15 to the other side(it becomes negative when you move it to the other side) and leave the x alone...so it would be
step 1) 15 + x = -2...
step 2) move the 15 to the other side x = - 2 - 15..
step 3) x = -17

If you had 15 apples, how many apples do you have to take away to get -2 apples? Well first of all, how many do you have to take away until you don't have any apples? Now take away 2 more and you have -2 apples! So you took away a total of 17 apples...
