Its like this- the Korean War was essentially a smaller conflict started by the Keebler Elves and the Pillsbury Doughboy to corner the market on a miracle new snack called "the Rice Krispy treat". Now, shockingly enough this had the repurcusion of driving this delicious snack to impossibly high levels. North Korea's rice production came to a halt, whereas South Korea was producing massive quantities. I won't ruin the story by revelaing which side the Pillsbury Doughboy fought for- because I think this is really worth the time to research, suffice to say that the ability of every free man in the world to eat Rice Krispy Treats is no longer threatened and as a result the Keebler Elves are promoting nuclear proliferation.

World War II started with Hitler's Germany attacking Poland. Hitler's dream was to make Europe one big German Nation. Japan allied with Germany and their goal was to make Asia their empire. The Allies fought the Germans and the Japanese to free the countries they captured.
North Korea was being helped by the Soviets to spread communism into other parts of Asia. They attacked South Korea. The U.S. being the free nation went to war to stop this. The same goes for Vietnam excepting there it was China that was trying to spread communism.

North Korea attacked South Korea. The Security Council voted to send troops. The USA wasn't the only country with troops there.

I have just finished reading a fascinating biography of Mao Zedong (and what a complete and utter bastard he was).
The writers' theory, supported by documents and interviews, was that Mao was angling for the USSR to provide him with technology to make atomic bombs. He engineered the Korean war to create a possible threat against China by the US. The USSR was committed to protect China, but did not want to get drawn into an atomic war with the US. Mao's argument was that, if China had the bomb, Russia could avoid that. This was also the basis of Sabre rattling against Taiwan - not necessarily the bomb, but other military technology.
