Since this is for work, you should:

1) Identify yourself by first and last name (this is for outsiders who don't know if they reached the right person or not)

2) Identify the department or company you work for (that way ousiders will know if they reached the right person or not)

3) That the person who is calling should leave their name and number.

4) That you will return your call as soon as possible. Never say "at my earliest convenience" because it makes you seem self important and that the call isn't worth the time or effort unless you deem it so.

Here's a simple sample message:

"Hi you have reached at . I have apparently stepped away and missed your call. Please leave your name and number and I will return your call as soon as possible."

Short and to the point. Nobody wants to hear a complicated or long message if they only want answers to their questions. Unless of course you want to discourage people from calling you.

Keep it simple!

Just say that you're unable to take the call right now, but ask for a detailed message to be left, along with a contact number. You could also look at leaving an alternative method for people to contact you, such as your email address.

I'm sorry, I'm away from my desk right now. If you would leave your phone number, a good time to reach you and state your concern after the beep. I would be happy to return your call.
