What happened to the days when the best person got the job? nowadays you get a job if your from e.g poland or your asian because we have to be seen to employ these groups or employers are deemed racists!

You get the job if you're from Poland because employers would prefer to employ an immigrant on less than minimum wage than employ a Brit and have to pay all the things they are entitled to.
It stinks as these Poles shouldn't even BE here.
Its shite to say they do the work "we" won't do. I know loads of Brits who are cleaners, labourers, bar staff, MaccyD's staff who find it hard enough to struggle on their low wages without having to compete for work with people who shouldn't even be in this country.

its political correctness gone mad. It is employers duty now to represent the population of the country, ie they cant have all white english men, they have to have a certain persentage of women, asian, african etc etc etc...
it is silly, and although i disagree with someone filling their workforce with white people just because they want to, i also disagree with them being forced to hire someone who may be lesser qualified for a job just because of their race.
At the end of the day, if there were 2 people coming for an interview and the better candidate was from an ethnic minority, you would hire them because s/he was the best.
you cant do anything these days without being branded a racist/sexist/ageist etc.
Political Correctness is ruining the world, everyone is too scared to take a responsibility for an action because they know someone out there wont like it (you can never please everyone) and they may get sued for it. they have to cover their own backs now.
Tracey H: just because you are black and have lots of black friends doesnt mean you know everything about policies regarding race and culture. employers DO have to have a certain persentage of certain races on their workforce. They CANT always employ the best person for the job, they have to meet certain targets including a mixedrace workforce

oh there are plenty of mad cows living around here by my husbands home, nasty females who have a go at him for nothing, terribly ill-tempered women living on the sosh.
when Britain had a teaching crisis several years back, i was given a job as a non-brit (not by interview, but GIVEN it telephonically cause the govt threatened to shut down the school cause it dint have enough MFL teachers...) i came just in time. my then boyfriend was doctor, also working here in the uk.
in my experience, i taught at 4 different schools, most kids did not seem interested in higher education. lots of foreigners here (at present) fill in professional vacancies because here's such a huge shortage of british professionals. then to add insult to injury (that of being PAID as a foreigner, and charged extra TAX, YES!) other teachers would comment and say the country is a mess cause here's so many foreigners working in it. no sirree, i dont think britain has gone mad, it was mad and pathetic when i got here...

I lived in Hackney in London back in the 80's. Then you had to be female, black and lesbian and that was the sure way to get a housing association flat. If you was a single mum on top of all that you got a house with a garden. The times are a changing :-)

It's a minefield of PC madness. If you go for the white person, the black person can sue for racism, if you employ the one with legs, the disabled person can sue you for disability discrimination. Maybe you just went for the right person for the job. It's hell for a small employer.

It's not as simple as that any more. You're right though, bosses do have to take into consideration race and gender when employing. The Polish are taking advantage of the work opportunities in Britain, and good luck to them, they've seen they can make some decent money. It may be a pain from our perspective, but if you want something to moan about, look at house prices! they're frightening!

You should listen to the Tom Russell song "Who's Gonna Build Your Wall" and substitute Mexicans for Poles. The reason people employ minorities is because they can get them to work for less. It's basically the new slave trade.

America's been having the same insanity. Even worse now our politically correct groups have gotten so bad some employers maybe afraid to hire a minority because of the fear they might not be able to fire them without a lawsuit.
