For technical accuracy, Palo Alto is on the south side not the east side. San Antonio College is near downtown and is a very good community college. St. Phillips is the east side community college.
UTSA has a nice campus and is a state school so it is comparatively affordable. Trinity University is probably the best school academically in San Antonio, but it is a very expensive private school. St. Mary's is a good school on the near west side, and is a medium priced private school.
Wayland Baptist University has a campus on IH-35 near O'conner and is a great school. It has an unusual structure since it is a private school that is set up locally more to help adults who are working continue their education than traditional students who just graduated high school, but it will allow you to get a great education and still have fun.

It's not really in San Antonio but it's thirty minutes away in San Marcos. TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY!!!! It's so much fun. We have a gorgeous river, great community, small college town mentality but with a party atmosphere, and the price is about the same price as UTSA.

I have a lot of friends that go to Palo Alto. It is on the east side, not a whole lot to do there. I think SAC is close to the downtown area there are a lot of things to do. And a lot of good places to eat.
