A hot shower will temporarily help with congestion, holding a very warm washcloth over your cheeks & forhead, will also help with congestion & sinus pressure. Gargling with salt water, can help ease a sore throat. Plain aspirin will help with aches & pains & has also been known to cut back on the duration of the illness by a few days. A heating pad behind your back is also comforting & Vicks Salve helps open up sinuses, if you breathe it in. (just inhale the vapors)
Try to stay away from commercial cold medicines...although they help at first, you usually feel worse after they wear off & sometimes they make the cold last a few days longer.
There is one "over-the counter" product that really helps me kick a cold, if taken when I first start to feel sick...I swear by this stuff...it's called "Airborne".

Drink plenty of fluids, so you don't dehydrate & get plenty of rest, to keep your immune system working strong. Good Luck...Hope you feel better soon.

Feed a cold, starve a fever. So eat lots of citrus fruits which are high in vitamin C.
If you are of drinking age try a hot toddy to sweat it out.
1 measure of dark rum
2 teaspoons of brown sugar
1 thick slice of lemon
top up with cooled boiled water.
Stir till sugar dissolves
add a small knob of butter and let this melt.
Then stir again.
Sip this then go to bed and sweat it out. The butter sounds yucky but does actually taste nice and will soothe your throat.

Cold-eeze zinc drops. They are the bomb. The only thing is you have to start taking them at the first sign of the cold to prevent it. If you start in the middle of one, it will weaken it within a day or 2. The cold virus is killed by the zinc. Very effective stuff. As far as immediate treatment, Dayquil.

Eat heavy amounts of citrus fruits, especially pineapple. Take easter C (buffered vit. C, to not irritate your stomach) in between eating. and as some suggested , some HOME MADE chicken soup, not the canned junk if possible. Get well soon.
