I am a senior in college and will graduate this May. When should I start applying for teaching positions for the 2007-2008 school year? Any advice about the application/interview/hiring process?

Start as soon as possible, but don't wait any later than January. That's when districts usually start to know what positions will be open the following September. So if your name is one of the first they have, you've got a better shot at getting an interview/job. As for other advice: make sure your resume and cover letter are COMPLETELY free of grammatical errors and confusing sentences. Most colleges have an office that can help with resumes, etc.- make an appointment and have the professionals go over it with you.

When you are ready to apply, send your applications to the district office, but also bring them in person to each school you are interested in. Dress professionally, and tell them that you'd be interested in interviewing. You may not get any further than the school secretary, but it can't hurt.

For interviews, bring along a small portfolio of the work you've done in college- lesson plans, unit plans, special projects, etc. and refer to it during the interview. Give them specific information about what you can do. Don't just say "I believe in good classroom management." Tell them specifically what you would do to make this happen.

P.S.- some districts like to get to know a person by having them be a substitute or leave replacement first, so don't be discouraged if you don't get your "own" job for September. Be patient and use the temp job as a chance to show them that you can be a professional.

GOOD LUCK!

You should begin applying after the first of the year. Make your applications brief, but include a resume, the district's application (Call, and they will send one to you.), and a brief cover letter expressing interest in obtaining a teaching position in that district. Good Luck!!
