When you know they are lying then stop and ask why...with a c a l m voice and and listen to what they say You might be surprised at what you find. They do this so cover up to protect you from disappointment of them, to their major reason ?????
12 years start talking c a l m now keep the door open and they will speak volumes

Taking away privileges is a good idea. TV, Phone, Fast Food, ect, are all privileges. Try taking away a favorite thing for a week, if they keep lying/disobeying, make it two weeks. But stick to your punishment. It will do absolutely no good if you say "No phone for a month," then let them have the phone back in a week.

needs consequences, depending on the kid is what the consequence would be, if they love TV, its a privilage, take it away for a month if they are lying... if they love their friends, same, same with phone, etc etc. YOU NEED to stick by the punishment though!!!

Supervise what you told them to do somewhere where they cant see you, then ask them about it later.
Which will tell you if they are lieing or not.

If they lie, ground them?

or

Sign them up for volunteer work.

or

Take them to the prison and show them what can become of liars?

well...hmmmm i think respecting your child privacy is very important. but still dont go completely out of their lives. especially during the teen stage but be there for them but dont ask them if they want to talk let them talk to you first =D

live with it they wont change because you told them too, sorry
my friend was really bad at 12 and she didn't learn anything by having privileges taken away it just made her hate her mom.

be nice to them. be their friend not their enemy so that they dont have to lie to you. become more involved with their life. also give them privacy.
