Your high school golf team shot rounds of 68, 70, 72, 78 and 84. If par for the course was 71, how many shots was the team over par?

First take the first round 71-68 makes you three under par. The next guy shot 70 so 71-70 = 1 under so now you would be 4 under par. The next guy shoots a 72. 72-71 = 1 which makes the team now back to 3 under par. The next guy shoots a 78. 78-71 = 7 over par. Now the team is 4 over par. Finally 84-71 = 13 over. Final total is 17 over par.

shots over par = ((68+70+72+78+84)/5)-71

=(372/5)-71

=74.4-71

=3.4

Or 3 if they round to the nearest stroke. I don't know how they score golf.

add up the scores, and divide by the number of scores (5)
then, find the difference between your answer and 71
