Several of the ways mentioned above will work, but the best way I have found is to use a round steel rod or even the round steel part of a screwdriver, start at the pivot point of the scissors and pretend you are trying to cut the round steel part of the screwdriver or steel rod, let it slide from the pivot point to the tip of the scissors, do this a few times, and your scissors are sharp. This sharpens both sides at the same time. Another good tool for sharpening scissors is the round steel sharpening tool which comes with some kitchen knife sets, just follow the directions listed above.

How To Sharpen Scissors

If it's a cheap pair, I'll give it a try with my knife sharpener, using it on each blade of the scissors. For a nicer pair of scissors, many hardware or fabric stores offer sharpening at a nominal cost (usually less than $5 and often just $1 or $2). Much less expensive than ruining a good pair of scissors by trying it at home.

. 1 Hold the beveled edge of one blade against a sharpening stone, which you can find at most large hardware stores.

2. Match the angle as closely as possible and slide the blade forward diagonally along the stone, moving from the end toward the screw (point to pivot).

3. Repeat with the other blade, again matching the angle.

4. Open and close the scissors a few times to knock off any burrs that might be left.

Tips:
Keep the stone lubricated as directed by its manufacturer.

Every time any of my scissors need sharpening I have this same problem. I sharpen all our my knives. But scissors are another thing entirely.

I tried it once and ruined them with not the right angle. I always vacillate $5.00 to have them sharpened or new ones. I understand your problem.

Many people have already told you that fabric stores frequently have scissor sharpeners come in every two or three months.

Good luck.

If you dont want to take them to a professional, try cutting up alumimum foil. It sharpens scissors and knives.

If you use the wetstone you have to put a wee amount of oil, not cooking, on the stone the run the edges against the stone away from you. At least that is how you sharpend knives on a wetstone.

go to wal mart. Purchase a fish hook sharpener.
run the scissor blade [s] thru the sharpener until you are satisfied.

Take a sheet of med fine sandpaper. Cut it into little pieces with the scissors, turning the scissors over every few cuts.

sharpening of scissors is not like sharpening of a knife.knife has tapered edges and hence should be sharpened at around 60degrees angle.but in the case of scissors there is no tapered edges . so both the legs of the scissors should be made perfect flat with a very soft flat grind stone. moreover the pivot of the scissors also should be tightened.

Many can openers have a knife sharpener running along the back of them. Also, know the scripture "iron sharpeneth iron"? You can use another blade or an iron stone to sharpen scissors. You can also get them sharpened at a hardware or craft store. When you try your wetstone, run the open blade one at a time across the stone as if you are spreading mayonnaise onto bread.

I have an easier way to sharpen scissors. Get some medium
grade sandpaper and use the scisssors to cut it up. The sandpaper will sharpen your scissors. Read this in a Do It Yourslef article. I tried it and it works. Hope this helps.
