wow i never heard it that early..but it means that your body is going through the process of getting ready for delivery but that doesnt mean that it will happen anytime soon...my sister was told her cervix was soft about 3 weeks before due date and she actually had to get her labor induced when she was 2 weeks past due date!

First of all let me say it's very hard for a doctor to accurately tell if you cervix is soft or not. It's sometimes at a difficult angle, and hard to judge because of your growing belly.

That said, if your cervix starts to soften early, and especially if it begins to efface, you should monitor it closely. Cervixes that are "weak" or soft or short can lead to early labor. The condition is called an Incompetant Cervix. You still have 8 weeks to go, which means you're past the point when an IC usually rears it's ugly head. Now, this might not be what you have, but you might want to read about it so you can ask your doctor pointed questions. MSN Groups has a great description of the condition.

Good luck.

As stated in a couple of other answers, the softening of the cervix is one of the first steps in the labor process. Your cervix will soften, then start to dilate and efface (thin) as you get closer and closer to your due date. You are approximately 6-7 weeks from your due date, so just because your cervix is softening, don't think that the big day is around the corner. I lost my mucous plug at 30 weeks, and started dilating at 32 weeks. When I was induced at 39 weeks, my mucous plug had regenerated itself 4 times (they don't tell you that!!) and I was only dilated 2cm and 75% effaced. I tell you that to say that although the softening is the beginning of the process, it could still take some time. Good luck!

your cercix will start to soften a couple months before you go into labor. Your body is going to go through a lot and it has to prepare for it over a period of time.

Means you are getting closer, but if you aren't dilated yet than don't worry. Your dr would tell you if you need to be on bed rest or anything
