My new hamster likes to roll around in her little ball, and she often goes into dark corners and starts grooming herself. She also does this if she gets stuck somewhere. Grooming is fine with me, but sometimes it seems like she's scratching too much. I guess I'm a little paranoid because my first hamster had a huge problem with mites under his skin, and I'm afraid of this one getting the same problem. Yes, I scoured everything the previous hamster used and even the things he never used, but maybe I'm a little OCD about this, and feel there's still a chance she could've gotten it too.

I hate when people just give a website and don't bother actually answering the question. They shouldn't get the two points for that. Or for calling hamster stinky, when they are some of the cleanest animals around.

Hamsters groom themselves when:

They get touched by humans

Feel dirty

Are nurvous

I find they do it when they wake up-like himans take a shower.

My hamster does the same thing. Just get them unstuck. Hamsters are darling little things, I love them (I am actually wearing an I love my hamster T-Shirt) Balls are not babysitters leep an eye on the hamster at all times.

Hamsters lick thier back foor and use it to scrub thier hard to reach places, it looks like scratching. I have had a hamster with a skin problem. He pulled on his hair- no scratching. So I believe hamsters don't scratch.
I hope this answers your question!

I used to breed hamsters when I was younger, hamsters grooming themselves is a sign of either nervousness, grubbiness or boredom, its perfectly normal, if they get stuck in a corner or something, they will often groom themselves while they work out a way to get out of the corner, they're very intelligent creatures and as long as you check their fur for fleas and mites, the grooming is perfectly natural.

Hamsters yes groom themselves so it would be fine but if you see fur missing then I would see a professional.

My hamster does the same thing, I guess that's normal because she is in good health no fur missing and not acting sick or anything.
