Express your sympathy for their loss and tell them you are there for them if they ever need anything, and BE THERE! Check on them to see how and what they are doing. You didn't say how you know this person. If it's a casual relationship, a periodic phone call will help. Invite them to go shopping or to a movie, etc., but be sure they understand your intention is just to help. If it's someone closer to you, be a friend with a listening ear. There are groups all across the country helping people deal with grief. Get them the number of one close to them, if you see they need additional help.

I lost my father when I was 11. Hug them and tell them to let you know if there is anything you can do. Do NOT go overboard with sympathy, it only serves to remind them. Check on them from time to time and just make sure they aren't isolating themselves for long periods. We all grieve differently.

Write a letter of encouragement and make sure that you are sincere and mean what you say. They can read it over and over again for encouragement. Make sure to point out something great over something you admired over the deceased person.

Thank you for caring. All you need to say is "I am truly sorry for your loss" If you want you can relate a caring sentiment for eg, Jim was always there for the people he cared about and I admired him for it. You don't have to go into a big spiel. Keep it simple and honest, it will be appreciated and Bless you
