Carbohydrates are the main source of energy in the body. Carbohydrates are broken down to glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream. In the period following a meal there is probably more glucose in the blood than the body can use. Excess glucose is converted to glycogen and stored for a period when glucose levels are low. The amount of glycogen stored in the body is limited. If there is still excess glucose present, it will be excreted in the urine. There is a so-called glucose tolerance test in which a person in a fasting state is fed a test dose of glucose and his blood glucose followed with time. This is a common way for detecting diabetes.
