As a Brit married to an American, I'd say, unreservedly, the Americans. The British have concepts of class, "properness", guilt and personal privacy that in general tend to make them more reserved. Very polite, but reserved. The Americans I've met, and having been across a good few times, I've met many, are generally warmer, more optimistic, less cynical people, and therefore more "friendly" in the traditional sense.
American comedian Bill Hicks talked about getting a movement together - the "People Who Hate People" Party, wistfully adding that "we're kinda having trouble getting off the ground."
In Britain, this isn't a problem. Get any two people together and they'll happily whinge about person number three, then go straight to person number three and whinge about each other...

I'm British but I still think Americans are probably more polite on first meeting.
I have American friends, but I find that in the end Brits are also more open minded, which helps in the friendliness ratings, I reckon.
I still think that if you find a well-mannered Brit, you won't find much better company. But always keep a Yank nearby: they always come in useful for something :o] !

I am british. I think the americans are a far more polite culture. Their whole public service ethic is so much more geared toward politeness and good manners. The british on the whole are pretty rude, unthinking and uncaring. Don't give a damn about public service or whether they have been polite or caring in their duty. Sorry if this offends but it is true I'm afraid.

I would have to say America. I went to the United Kingdom with my uncle, and people made comments like,"Dumb Americans", etc. I haven't ever seen an American treat a British person that way.

Just because you typed BRITISH in capitals i am guessing you think we are..... well i agree.... but one thing i have always admired about the old u.s.a is that they sing their national anthem in schools every day and i think we should do that as well, for it is respectful and reminds us that we are a great nation.... well there you have it...

I'd have to say that the americans are friendly when they realise you're from the uk but then ask stupid questions like "do you know the queen" do they even realise how big britain is?

It's people who are friendly and you can't differentiate between them because of their nationality or their race or their religion. If you were drowning and a hand was outstretched to help you would you ask where they were from before taking it?

Certain parts of America are very friendly. Most of the UK is very frosty. The Welsh are just nasty and rude
