I'm trying to find sad, emotional, heart rending songs. From the 80's onwards, no cheesy pop please! Sort of rock, indie, goth, that sort of thing, again, cheesy pop is a no no. Just my taste, no offense to any fans! Any ideas anyone?

Forget about Annie's Song - John Denver did a wonderfully emotive song actually CALLED "Like A Sad Song" -
Usually in the morning
I'm filled with sweet belonging
And everything is beautiful to see
Even when it's raining
The sound of heaven singing
Is simply joyful music to me
Sometimes i feel like a sad song
Like I'm all alone without you
So many different places
A million smiling faces
Life is so incredible to me
Especially to be near you
And how it is to touch you
Oh, paradise was made for you and me
Sometimes I feel like a sad song
Like I'm all alone without you
I know that life goes on just perfectly
Everything is just the way that it should be
Still there are times when my heart feel like breaking
And anywhere is where I'd rather be
Oh, and in the nighttime
I know that it's the right time
To hold you close and tell you I love you so
To have someone to share with
And someone I can care with
And that is why I wanted you to know
Sometimes I feel like a sad song
Like I'm all alone without you
Without you.
If the lyrics aren't enough for you once you HEAR it - complete with tune you'll know what I mean. It's SO mournful yet so beautiful at the same time...

Agree totally with Kim on The Cure's Untitled and Closedown, and would also add:
The Cure - Sinking
The Cure - any from the Faith album, esp All Cats are Grey and The Funeral Party
Joy Division - Love will tear us apart again
Joy Division - New Dawn Fades
Moby - My Weakness and Why does my heart feel so bad (from Play)
Blur - No Distance Left To Run (from 13)
Spiritualized - Broken Heart
for starters anyway....

Evening, Devon Lass,
I really recommend this one, called 'Where I can't follow', there are the lyrics,
Can you hear me?
Do you listen to the words that I have come to say?
I feel so frightened
The world has changed and I'm lost, I can't find my way
I still miss you
In some past life
I was happy, I knew joy, felt it from day to day
Now only pictures
To remind me of the moments that time takes away
I still miss you
And the leaves still fall
And the sun it keeps shining
Like it means nothing at all
That inside I'm still crying
'Til death do us part
I thought they'd only be words we'd say
You've broken my heart
I guess it also died that day
And where you've gone I can't follow
But we'll meet again some day
I stare at the sun
And feel time drifting away
Still trying to find
Some sense of direction
A purpose to be
Not stuck in reflection
I still miss you
And the leaves still fall
And the sun it keeps shining
Like it means nothing at all
That inside I'm still crying
You can hear http://artists.cpu.ie/bands/206/index.php,
Why the interested in sad songs? I hope all is well in your world!

The Cure tracks "Untitled" and "Closedown" from the album Dinsintegration, and "Siamese Twins" from the album Pornography.
"Almost Blue" by Elvis Costello
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division
"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths
"Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails (or Johnny Cash, if you prefer)
"Mr. Ambulance Driver" by The Flaming Lips
Not from the 80s onward, but if you haven't checked out "Pale Blue Eyes" by The Velvet Underground or "These Days" by Nico, they're a must.
