When you sign your name on the marriage certificate with your husbands last name does that legally change your last name or is there more you must do in order for the name change to be legal? I've had this conversation with my newly wed sister who said that she went to the social security office and also filled out paperwork to legally change her name. I thought that by signing the marriage certificate it was legal and that that was all that needed to be done. Someone please clear this up for me. So basically if someone were to only sign the certificate with the "new" last name, can they start using that as their last name or is it not final until the information is submitted with the social security office?
Any help on clearing this up is appreciated. Thanks.

You have to show that certificate to the SSecurity so they could futher update your records with them. You need the marriage certificate in anywhere you would want your name updated like in banks, insurance, revenue service, passport processing, driver's license, etc.

You sign your maiden name on the certificate. Had you signed with his name, your marriage wouldn't be valid. A name change due to marriage is free. A name change for any other reason is not.

Just signing your marriage certificate doesn't change your name. It has to be filed and recognized by the court, first. You will then receive a 'certified' copy of said filed certficate -- THEN your name is legally changed. You will need this certified paper to change the name on your social security card, drivers license, etc.

I guess to get credit for social security later you need to have both names registered. You have to notify the bank and the Department of moter vehicles on your drivers license.
There is quit a bit to do when you get married.
Your name is changed by you still need to notify the ones who need to know. Like credit cards, social security card, drivers license, let the bank know your new name. Even the post office had to be notified because mail came in the new name, that wasn't delivered. I remember that my medical records at the doctors office and the hospital. It is endless trust me.

No you have to send in a form to the Social Security office asking for a new card with your new name and then once you get that you can cange your name for all your other stuff. License etc.

In the UK it is only legal if you decide to use that name- ie, change your bank details. You don't need to go through deed-pole. You can have any name you want, and if it is through marriage then you are legally entitled to use it. You just have your marriage certificate to prove it when you change important documents.
