They are a cab over with a set back front axle, a double frame, and hydraulics for the bed. T Hey are like a semi, but built for a different purpose. Smaller engines too

Not quite, a semi is a tractor (the part the driver sits in) and a trailer. A garbage truck is all one part, a large engine and drivers area, and an even larger bed frame with a compartment for garbage storage and compression. It more closely resembles a dump truck, and in fact is exactly what it is, it's just not got an open top to it. It's job is to haul large amounts of refuse to a landfill area. Where it then opens the back, and pushes the junk out. Much like a dump truck does when it arrives with a load of refuse or building material. However, some garbage trucks don't have a back end that tilts, and just uses a large hydrolic plate that forces the garbage out. This isn't always the case however, you do find garbage trucks that have a retractable back end that tilts just like a dump truck's does.

All of the garbage trucks I've ever seen had the engines mounted low and exposed in the middle. It had an 11 liter engine which is enough to power some of the lighter duty semi's. Most trucks have the engine in the front or at least the cab over the engine. The garbage truck engine was underneath the "storage container"( If you wanted to work on the engine, you had to climb into where they have the garbage and remove a plate to access the valve cover on top of the engine. )

Semis are usually one vehicle pulling trailers. Garbage trucks are single vehicles. Both are commercial vehicles but semis are class A while single vehicles are class B
