I am not all that smart to begin with even though I have several degrees. Mostly AA's AS's
Gettiing degrees is just a matter of staying in school (community college was affordable until they raised the rates to those who had a baccalaureate)

I have done well in school as far as grade go averaging between 2.8 and 3.2 over the course work.

Certainly not great but not miserable either.

It seems as though the more I know on any particular subject or in general the dumber I feel.

I was/am often annoying teachers and others because I would/do ask why or how ,etcetera, all too often.

My reading skills are poor it takes several days to read though a small book and text books often seem impossible to get the information I want.

Why do I feel so stupid?

Get check for reading disabilities, some people with them function very well because they put a lot of effort in it. I have had the same problem. Take a course in improving your reading, and reading retention. Do not do homework in front of the TV... but your grades show effort. And hey why do you think they say live and learn there's more to life than what you will ever get out of the books. lol:-)

Hi,

Learning is like a tree, when you're born you're traveling up the trunk. Every time you learn something you travel across a branch - WHICH leads to other Branches...

This is an eternal quest and you may feel challenged(not dumb) for the rest of your life. There are always many more things to learn from what ever path you take(learn).

I would feel proud to know things, rather than challenged about what I haven't learned yet!

You may find that you read slow(personal opinion) due to trying to increase you comprehension. A skill I use myself.

I think you're a lot smarter than you give yourself credit for. You've actually hit upon one of the basic laws of learning: the more you learn about a subject, the more you realize how much more there is to learn. That's not being stupid, it's being realistic. I respect you far more than the arrogant pretender who thinks they know it all. Enroll yourself in a reading comprehension course at community college and you'll be fine. And those teachers impatient with your questions...ask them one more question: "What's a student supposed to do if they don't follow what you're saying--keep quiet and fail?" You keep asking and make those lazy lumps earn their paycheck like everyone else. Remember, it's your hard-earned tuition money that pays their salary! Good luck and hang in there!!

I think that these feeling that you have are a normal process of learning. I more information you acquire, the more complex the subject become.

Also, the more information you have in your brain, the longer it takes sometimes to derive an answer. This is because you have a larger knowledge base to draw from.

I am 34 and have played the piano my whole life. Sometimes when I play, songs come out of me that I forgot I knew!

Just don't be down on yourself for knowing things.

Congratulations. The way you're feeling right now is a hallmark of someone who is getting smarter. You see... the more you know and understand about the world around you the better able you are to recognize just how much MORE there is that you don't (yet) know. Truly stupid people have no idea how little they actually know because they can't see much beyond their meager store of knowledge. If you feel stupider it's because you're getting smarter. I know... it's a paradox. Just remember. Any paradox can be paradoctored .

I also consider myself pretty smart (I mean, not to be conceited nor anything but I sometimes feel superior rather than dumber) Although I am in the same grammar boat as you. I personally think you probably are setting goals for yourself pretty high and are stressing yourself cuz your not getting it faster. My advice.... take it easy on yourself.

Sounds like you are too hard on yourself. Don't think of yourself as dumb. Once you learned something, haven't you applied that knowledge? If not, stop learning, and start doing something with what you'vs learned.
To question our ignorance is a sign of progress, but to be-rate ourselves is not productive!

I do not think it is a question of stupidity, you may just have to adjust you re study times, you may be trying to rush things along, set a pace that is comfortable.......Take a break, and do something for yourself, but most of all too many people can gain so much knowledge, that it clouds their common sense, if you do not have common sense, along with knowledge, its like living on one track. knowledge is fine, but you also have to know how to apply it to daily life that makes sense..........

1) You are supposed to feel like that - the beginning of wisdom is humility.

2) Sounds like you have had bad teachers if they do not cherish your curiosity.
